Naturism in a cold climate

One of the things which most puts off British people from trying naturism is our inclement weather. ''I'd definitely be willing to try it, but not in this country; it's too cold'' is a comment which I hear depressingly often from would-be British naturists.

I get it. There are really only three months at most where the British climate is reliable enough for outdoor nudism. But naturism doesn't have to be a one-dimensional activity involving lying on a beach or swimming. As I said in my last post, an easy way into naturism is to turn the central heating up and be nude at home; dispense with the dressing gown between bedroom and bathroom, sit around nude late at night or if you work from home, then don't bother to get dressed in the mornings. As a writer and journalist, I often work nude, with the sun streaming through the southeast-facing windows of our house.

There are other options. My wife and I regularly visit Clover Spa (www.cloverspa.co.uk) in the leafy suburbs of Birmingham; yes, it has a garden perfect for nude sunbathing but it also has a hot tub in the garden. Of course, I fail to see why anyone would wear a swimming costume in a hot tub anyway, but being nude in a hot-tub at this time of year is one of life's memorable experiences. I will never forget the Sunday afternoon between Christmas and New Year which we spent in the hot tub at Clover Spa, with a drink in hand and heavy snow falling all around us. The fact that Clover is on the flightpath to Birmingham Airport, just six miles away, made it even more memorable.

And what about a sauna? The Finnish cultural tradition of being nude in the sauna is perfect for this time of year and is a good introduction to family naturism. Some European naturist  resorts specifically cater for indoor nudity in the winter, with prices reduced accordingly.

Then there is the wellness world. If you do yoga or pilates every morning, do you need to buy a special kit to do it in. Why not do it nude? And if you have a specific daily exercise routine, does that need clothes (OK, I'll make an exception of sports bras for the ladies)?.

If it is to succeed in the 21st century, naturism has to find new ways to show people the benefits of social nudity. Getting away from the idea that the only way to practice naturism is around a pool or in a garden or on a beach in a hot summer climate is one of the most important ones.
